THE VISITOR
An exhibition by Judith Alder and Clare Whistler.
Eastbourne Redoubt, 7 April to 13 May
There will be short performances by Clare Whistler and Freya Wynn-Jones with libretto by Mark Hewitt on 12 May as part of Eastbourne Redoubt’s Torchlight Tour between 7 and 9pm (numbers are limited). Free with admission to the museum (£4.50/£3.25 or £3.50/£2.25 with Eastbourne Leisure Card)
Three years. Four locations: Since April 2009, artist Judith Alder and dancer/choreographer/director Clare Whistler have come together in a working partnership, visiting four special locations which are steeped in history, to make a new body of work now on display at Eastbourne’s Napoleonic Redoubt fortress.
Alder and Whistler have made work through visits to a ruined oasthouse at Bunce’s Barn in the Sussex Weald, an ancient tithe barn at Great Dixter and the Freud Museum, London. Work originating in those three locations is now brought back to the site of the very first Visitor which was filmed and photographed on location at the Redoubt Fortress, Eastbourne in 2009.
The Visitor exhibition is a collection of works which respond to these four special sites, exploring our relationship with the world we live in and our attempts to understand it by tracing and mapping our own and others’ histories. The work is presented as a series of video installations, a collection of photographic works and limited edition digital prints, live performance and a limited edition book including responses to the work by guest writers Kay Syrad, Seb Doubinsky, Martin Felton and Martha Stutchbury.
